Thankful for Swimming Pools

My kids are taking swimming lessons and it reminds me of how thankful I am for swimming pools.

I had a swimming pool in our backyard when I was growing up. It was very nice. Sure, just about everyone in Florida has a swimming pool, but still it was very nice to have a swimming pool growing up and I am really thankful for swimming pools.

Yesterday was Hannah's birthday. She turned 6. I am very thankful Hannah turned 6 and that she had such a fun birthday party. Her cousins Danielle and Elizabeth slept over with her Grammie (Jill's mom).

The car again

Ok, so now that I have been driving the car for two days, I just have to repeat how thankful I am we have a new car. Not just because it gives us two cars, but also because I LOVE driving it. Our other car is a big SUV (Ford Expedition) and while I have gotten used to driving it, I feel SOOOOOOO much more comfortable driving a smaller car. I am very happy with it.

I am very thankful for Medical Insurance. This morning I went to get blood work done, and I didn't have my insurance card with me, so I have to go back some other morning. It was a bit frustrating, but on my way back I realized how thankful I am to have insurance.

I have diabetes, and I don't know how I would afford to cover all my medical expenses without insurance. I am very, very, very thankful for the medical insurance that my company provides me with.

Thankful the Winter Olympics are Over

As much as I enjoyed the Winter Olympics and as much money as my wife made from her blog on the Winter Olympics, I am still very thankful that the Winter Olympics are over. It was a lot of work for my wife to constantly write about the Olympics. But it was definitely worth while.

Anyway, I am thankful the Winter Olympics are over. Congratulations to all of the athletes. It was fun watching all of you try your best.

Taylor Hicks

I have really enjoyed watching Taylor Hicks sing in the American Idol auditions leading up to the top 24. Last night, he sang the Elton John song "Levon" and he was awesome! I love watching him perform. You can just tell he LOVES music. To top it off, when I was a kid I owned an Elton John album with the song Levon on it and it was one of my favorites at the time. So hearing him sing a song I liked made it that much better.

I am very thankful for Taylor Hicks. I really look forward to hearing him sing every week.

There is a new show on CBS called "Love Monkey". It is really cool. It may be my second favorite show on tv right now. It's great because it has a little bit of everything in it (relationships with friends, business dealings, comedy, drama, etc.). It's a fun show to watch.

I am thankful for the television show called Numb3rs (aka. Numbers). Numb3rs is a really cool show. I love the way they use math to solve mysteries. It is a very unique show. Having a minor in Math makes me appreciate the show all that much more.

The episodes that contain less violence we let our 12 year old watch and he really likes the show as well.

Last year my friend was without power for two weeks after a hurricane just missed his house in Florida. I am very thankful we have electricity!

I have mentioned before that I am thankful for my wife Jill Marie Manty. I just had to mention it again. She has been so committed to helping Hurricane Katrina evacuees, she is so passionate about helping the needy for as long as I have known her.

Her passion for helping others has made me a better person, and I am very grateful for that. I am very thankful to have Jill as my wife.

Alternative Giving for Katrina

My wife Jill just created a new blog called Alternative Giving. Living Houston one of the things we discovered is that many of the shelters here are not supported by the Red Cross because of all the red tape you have to go through to be a certified Red Cross shelter. Most of the people we know here in Houston are spending a lot of their free time helping out at the shelters as much as they can, but our people and money resources are being put to the test.

So my wife Jill decided there needed to be a way for people outside of Texas to support these shelters that aren't well advertised. Thankful for Relief Workers

I have already said this, but I will say again, I am thankful for all the people volunteering to help the disaster relief effort. If there were this many people volunteering to help the homeless and poor, etc, in this country on a regular basis this country would have far less problems. I hope this relief effort spreads beyond Hurricane relief. It is definitely bringing people in Houston together and apparently across the country as well.

I am very thankful for the response of the majority of people in this country to the disaster.

Thankful for Disaster Relief

I am thankful for all the organizations and people that provide disaster relief.

For those who want to help, you can donate to the Salvation Army (http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/).

I generally don't donate to the Red Cross because of the high percentage of the donation that goes to administrative costs. However, if you prefer you can donate to the Red Cross. They do a lot of good work.

Also, many nearby states have shelters open for people displaced from hurricane Katrina. You can donate directly to those shelters. Quite a few Churches in Houston are being used as shelters. You can also donate your time at the shelters.

Thankful I no longer live in high hurricane risk area

I am thankful I no longer live in an area with high risk for hurricanes. I have been through many hurricanes in Florida. Never really liked them. I got to go outside in the middle of a hurricane eye once when I was a teenager. While that was a really cool experience, the dead silence in the middle of a storm. I would still much prefer being away from hurricanes.

Anyway, my prayers go out to those who lived and have love ones that were in the path of Hurricane Katrina. I am truely thankful that I am no longer close to the coastline.

Thankful Hurricane Katrina Did NOT Hit at full Strength

As bad as Hurricane Katrina was it could have been worse. It could have been a strong Category 5 instead of a strong Category 4 Hurricane. I hate to think of it being worse, but it could have been. I remember when Category 5 Andrew swept south of where I was living in South Florida. It's winds were so strong it just flattened everything. I am glad Katrina didn't have Andrew's winds (or stronger) when it hit. It was really bad, but I am thankful it wasn't worse, and pray for the well being of all those who are on the coasts of Louisana, Missipi, Alabama and FL.

We should all lend a helping hand to those in need.

Thankful for Nature

Nature is pretty amazing. I saw these strange photos of clouds the other day and while they are scary looking to me, they are also pretty amazing. Growing up in south Florida, the beach is what comes to mind when I think of nature. Anyway, I am very thankful for nature, the clouds, tree, animals, beaches, mountains, hills, etc.

Thankful for Eyesight

I have diabetic retinopathy. The first couple of years after being diagnosed with retinopathy I had a lot of work done on my eyes (laser surgery, steroid treatments, etc.) My eyesight has since stabilized (it is not perfect). The experience I have had with my vision has made me very, very thankful to have eyesight. I am very thankful for being able to see.

I am very thankful for legos. I used to play hours and hours with legos in my room, building new imaginative things. My kids love legos and do the same thing. I am thankful for photos. When I am at work, sometimes I miss my wife and kids, but I can also see them in the photos I have of them throughout my office.

Every now and then I like to look through old photo albums and reminisce on "the good old days".

Lastly, one thing I really like is to take digital photographs of the family and send them to my parents in Florida, because they don't get a chance to see us that often.

I just have to laugh. I am thankful for my occasional forgetfulness, because sometimes it can put a smile on face.

Babies are so interesting to watch grow up into toddlers. Our baby John Victor has always been very happy and even though he recently cut two teeth and is still teething, he has such a happy demeanor. It is fun to watch him learn to interact with his broters and sister. It is fun to watch him learn to grab things and make cute noises. In no time he will be eating solid food, crawling, walking, running, etc. It is so nice to watch them grow up. I am very thankful for babies (especially mine).

I used to play basketball all the time as a kid. And it kept me in good shape. I am very thankful for basketball and the things I learned from playing it. I am also thankful for the good physical shape it kept me in.

Thankful for email

My wife just emailed to tell me I should be thankful for email, because I just emailed her from ten feet away. She's right! I am very thankful for email. It's one of the ways I have been able to keep in touch with old friends. I barely ever call people anymore, email is one of my prime modes of communication. I am very, very thankful for email.

Thankful for My Dad

It's my Dad's birthday and although I have already mentioned it, I am very thankful for my Dad (aka. Brian Alan Manty). He has certainly been an inspiration for me in business and was a great provider for our family. I am very thankful for my Dad and wish him a Happy Birthday.

I really like peanuts. I really, really like peanut butter, which is made from peanuts. I am very thankful for peanuts. Without them it would be much more difficult to be a vegetarian.

I really like swiss cheese. I have always liked various cheeses. I am really thankful for swiss cheese, it has made for many tasty sandwhiches in my adult life.

I am very thankful I live in Texas.
Texas is a great place to homeschool. The people are very nice here. There is a lot of space here. Most of my family is here. Texas is a good place to live. I am very thankful I live in Texas.

I am very thankful our baby John Victor is so calm. He got two new teeth this week (just prior to turning 4 months) and he barely complains about them. He is just so calm. Maybe it was the homebirth... Anyway, I am very thankful he is so calm.

Thankful Matthew will be back home soon

Our oldest child Matthew is at his Dad's house in Washington state and we miss him. I am very thankful he has had a safe and fun trip. I am also very thankful that he will be coming back Sunday! It will be good to have him back in the house. We all miss him very much. I am very thankful Matthew is coming back soon.

We have an awful nasty thunderstorm coming in right now. Looking at satellite footage it looks like it may be the top part of Hurricane Emily. I am very thankful we didn't get a direct hit from Hurricane Emily.

I am thankful that Drew saved a life today

I am thankful that sports agent Drew Rosenhaus was able to save a little boys life.

I heard an interview with Drew this morning. Drew said when the water shot out from the boys mouth it was the BEST moment in his life, because at that moment he felt like the boy would live.

I am very thankful anytime a life is saved. This reminds me how grateful I am for life.
